Director Pink: Crafting Stories, One Visual at a Time

At just 25, Praise Onyeagwalam, professionally known as Director Pink, is rapidly becoming one of Nigeria's most visionary music video directors. With an expressive visual language that blends cinematic flair, cultural resonance, and emotional nuance, she's shaping how Afrobeats and African music at large are seen and felt.

Her most recent work, Davido's 10 Kilo, is a prime example of this vision. The video doesn't just accompany the song; it expands it. Through deliberate camera movements, atmospheric settings and a keen sense of rhythm, Pink transforms the track into a visual experience that deepens the audience's connection to the music. 10 Kilo captures both grit and glamour, showing her ability to balance raw realism with artistic finesse.

Humble Beginning: From Church Media to Creative Visionary

Although formally trained in Economics at the University of Lagos, Director Pink's actual education began earlier, in her church's media setup, where she started providing filming and editing services at the age of 15. Her first professional breakthrough came in 2020, when she directed “Philomena” by Marxii, marking the official launch of her directing career.

Breakout Moments & Signature Works

  • Her music video for Chike ft Simi's  “Running To You” became the most-viewed Nigerian music video in early 2021, immediately putting her on the creative map.
  • She expanded her storytelling palette with the short horror film “Lady Koikoi” (2021), inspired by a Nigerian high school folktale.
  • Her visual for Chike & Mohbad's “Egwu” was not only a cinematic standout infused with Lagos street imagery and rich traditional motifs, but it also earned her the Music Video of the Year Award at the Headies 2025. It also won the Viewer’s Choice, showing deep fan appreciation.

Other Collaborations & Accolades

Director Pink’s versatility shines through her work across genres:

  • She's directed “Confidence” by Mercy Chinwo, conveying deep gospel messaging through narrative-driven visuals
  • Abracadabra” (Wizkid, Skibii, Naira Marley & Rexxie), and “Spell” (Chike ft Oxlade)

In 2024, she received the Best Video Director Award at AFRIMMA, affirming her regional impact.

Creativity as Culture, and Legacy in the Making

Director Pink is not just about visuals; she's about empowerment. As the founder of Pinkline Films and Pinkline Academy, she mentors emerging filmmakers (especially young women), building a legacy beyond just the camera.

In interviews, she emphasises creative collaboration and adaptability; there's no single visual style she adheres to. Instead, she approached each project by crafting mood boards that bring out both the artist’s personality and the emotional pulse of the song.

Closing note

As she continues to build her portfolio, one thing is clear: Director Pink is not just making videos; she’s shaping the culture. And with works like 10 Kilo setting the tone, the industry can only expect even bigger statements from her in the years to come.
